IT ALL STARTED WHEN I WAS A LITTLE BOY.
I was 8 when I decided I wanted to be a lawyer, and in 10th grade my gym teacher yelled "Wilson-you argue more than any other student that I've had in 35 years!"
I majored in Criminal Justice at Michigan State University and graduated Cum Laude in 1984. I studied Criminal Law and Criminal Law Procedure as a sophomore at MSU because I couldn't wait until law school. I took every law, government, and constitutional history class I could. I took two courses in Judicial Policy-Making, aced both, and Professor Spaeth is still pissed that he had to give his first-ever A+. I learned everything I could about how the System works and how it doesn't work, and how judges reach their decisions. I was President of Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society. I found my passion very early.
I FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS. I DON'T QUIT OR GIVE UP. EVER.
A radical conservative group tried to ban certain movies shown on campus and I protested for our First Amendment rights. I still have the State News article and the picture of me with my picket sign. I was blackballed by my college fraternity because I had the nerve to write a Letter to the Editor pointing out the hypocrisy of the Greek System when another fraternity kicked a member out because he was "discovered" to be gay. Society has evolved-can you imagine that happening today? If I was ahead of my time, it's because I've always been intolerant of abuse and I won't stand idly by in the face of intolerance or abuse--especially when the Government is doing the abusing.
MY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE SET ME APART
My success at MSU got the attention of The Detroit College of Law. I was named a Presidential Scholar and awarded a full-ride scholarship. I earned 3 American Jurisprudence Awards, which are won by the highest grade-earner in each class. I'm most proud of my Award for Free Speech Law. My 3rd AmJur Award (Local Government Law) led to my first job as an attorney. I argued so well (and so much) in the Local Government Law class that the professor told me that his office needed "fighters" and he asked me to interview for a job. That Professor was the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for all of Wayne County, and I was hired as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in 1988.
I LEARNED THAT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS RIGGED-AGAINST YOU
I left the Wayne County Prosecutor's office after three and a half years as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney because the systemic abuses of the criminal "justice" system made me sick. I fought against the abuses of police and judges who refuse to pay attention to the laws they promised to uphold. I held the office record for the number of times I was held in contempt-but all of those cases were appealed and I won each and every one. You see, I also took an oath, and the oath that I took said nothing about bowing down. To anyone.
As a prosecuting attorney I discovered that police lie all the time. The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) says that's okay. Well, its not okay, and it's wrong for prosecutors to routinely over-charge criminal defendants by inflating the allegations against them so they can "plea bargain" later. It's not a bargain when you're ambushed and then later you're offered a cookie. Accused citizens don't get a fair shake unless they have a skilled criminal defense warrior on their side. The game is rigged in favor of the "police-court-probation-Secretary of State-jail-prison complex" that has replaced the old "military-industrial complex" that our grandparents and parents fretted about. And they thought they had something to worry about!
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MY CLIENT'S LIVES
My conscience and personal values told me that I couldn't continue to represent the police and the government. I've been representing people accused of crimes since 1992 when I started my own criminal defense practice. I've always had a thing for the underdog. I was the youngest of 6 kids, the only one in my family to go to college. My dad was a blue-collar worker, and I'm thankful my mother was a stay-at-home mom. What does this have to do with your criminal case? Why should you care? I worked my way to where I am now, and I'll work just as hard to protect you. I promise.
When you're charged with a crime you need the best advice and counsel. You need a highly-trained, experienced and dedicated criminal defense lawyer. That's me.
Forget any concerns about what lawyers are like. Come on in and sit down with me. You'll find me to be refreshingly different. I look forward to helping you any way that I can.
